Many pregnant women begin to worry in their third trimester that they may be leaking amniotic fluid. If you’re asking yourself, “Am I leaking amniotic fluid or urine?” it can help to understand what’s normal discharge during pregnancy and what isn’t.
Am I Leaking Amniotic Fluid?
In your third trimester you may have occasional leaks of urine, which is fairly normal. Leaking amniotic fluid is not and should not occur until you’re in labor. Amniotic fluid has a clear appearance usually, but it may even be pinkish, brown, green or yellow. You can often tell the difference between leaking urine and amniotic fluid by the amount. Leakage should not just happen sporadically if it’s amniotic fluid but instead be a continuous leak of fluid. If you’re still wondering “Am I leaking amniotic fluid?” try wearing a pad and lying down for 30 minutes or so. If you feel a gush when you stand, tit’s probably amniotic fluid. Be sure to contact your doctor right away if you suspect a leak of amniotic fluid.
