Default Treating Acne During Pregnancy

Acne during pregnancy is relatively common, as elevated hormone levels can bring on many skin changes. For non-pregnant women, acne is usually treated with prescription drugs like Retin-A and Tetracycline or over-the-counter medications. Pregnant women or those trying to conceive, however, must discuss their condition with a dermatologist or doctor to determine the right treatment.

Treating Acne During Pregnancy with OTC Medications
There are many medications that should be avoided during pregnancy, including those containing salicylic acid. Those containing benzoyl peroxide are usually recommended as safe for pregnant women, although there aren’t many studies on the subject.

Prescription Drugs for Acne During Pregnancy
Most prescription drugs for acne are not safe during pregnancy, making it important to discuss your pregnancy or plans to become pregnant with your doctor. Unsafe prescriptions include Accutane and Tetracycline. Retin-A should also be avoided as not many studies have been performed on this medicine during pregnancy. The drug of choice for acne during pregnancy is erythromycin, or Erygel, as well as Azelaic acid. Both are topically applied as a gel or lotion and are available by prescription only.

Best Treatment for Acne During Pregnancy
The best way to treat acne during your pregnancy is through medication-free grooming habits. Begin by washing your face twice daily with a gentle and mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid over-the-counter medicated acne treatments unless approved by a doctor. Make sure to keep your hair off your face and wash your hair every day if it’s oily. Don’t pop or squeeze pimples, which spreads the infection on your face and may cause scarring. Use oil-free makeup products and do your best to keep your hands off of your face, which rubs oil into your pores and makes acne worse.
